# What type of triggers/markers can I record with EEG data from Smarting?

Smarting Streamer software can receive two types of wireless triggers, which are then automatically synced with EEG data:

- LabStreamingLayer (LSL) protocol → recorded in XDF file
- User Datagram Protocol (UDP) protocol → recorded in BDF file

Depending on which trigger presentation software you use, you'll opt for either LSL or UDP triggers. Some presentation tools support both protocols, so  you can choose the communication protocol with Smarting Streamer.
